A member asked:

Is it easy to feel a parathyroid tumor?

9 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

No: The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone which helps to maintain calcium levels. Majority of primary hyperparathyroidism is detected in asymptomatic patients on routine laboratory screening panels. The parathyroid glands are quite small even when enlarged. It is not easy and very difficult to feel a parathyroid tumor.

No: Parathyroid tumors are rarely palpable. The diagnosis of a parathyroid tumor is based initially on the presence of elevated calcium associated with high or high normal parathyroid hormone.
