I had a 1:160 ana blood result. further testing for lupus was negative and my rheumatoid factor was normal. what could the high ana be caused by?

Depends: For many labs 1:160 is the threshold to report the test as positive. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context. ANA has a large incidence of false positive results. See this site for more info and discuss the issue with your doctor. http://www.rheumatology.org/practice/clinical/patients/diseases_and_conditions/antinuclear_antibodies_%28ana%29/.
