Can a benign enlarged prostate of an over 80 year old male be treated with medication or must it be partially removed?

Other BPH Options: While a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) remains an excellent option for bph, there are several other surgical therapies. They are less likely to have side effects more common in turp, such as incontinence, impotence, retrograde ejaculation, or TUR syndrome (absorbing too much fluid during surgery). If medications fail or are intolerable, ask your urologist about tumt, tuna or gyrus.

Try medication first: If you are not having acute persistent retention of urine but rather bothersome symptoms, a trial of medication is definitely warranted. Alpha blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (tamsulosin and finasteride) can be used together or alone to address the symptoms of BPH as well as the size of the prostate. Men with larger prostates (> 50cc) benefit most from Finasteride as part of the plan.
