Alpha fetoprotein?: There is a test that's typically done at 15-20 weeks of alpha-fetoprotein. AFP is made in liver of baby. High levels can signify spina bifida, anencephaly, chromosomal problems, and problems with baby's intestines being outside their abdominal wall. When one of these markers (there are 4 that are done) is elevated, additional ultrasounds are done and amniocentesis is typically offered.
