Avoid surgery...: Sounds like a common condition, disc degeneration. Yes it can happen in a 22 year old. If you smoke, quit. If you are overweight, you need to lose it. Stretching has been shown to be helpful as has physical therapy. There is no role for narcotic pain meds but nsaid's should help. Lifestyle changes and activity modifications will help you. Good luck, its a hard problem to overcome.
