Frequently fatal: Most babies with encephaloceles will die before birth, and many of those who survive to birth die after birth. If the encephalocele sac contains only fluid the baby is much more likely to survive than if it contains brain tissue. If a baby survives to birth, surgery can be done to remove the sac and try and replace brain tissue into the baby's head.

Surgery: Encephalocele means that part of the brain is outside the skull, usually enclosed in a sac. Neurosurgery first determines what brain structures are involved with an mri, then will proceed to repair the encephalocele. Usually that part of the brain is removed.
