Depends on location: An encephalocele is characterized by the outpouching of brain and its overlying meninges through a defect in the skull. This is the result of some problem during development where the notochord did not close. These are reduced and covered to prevent CSF infection. The risk depends on the location and the size. There is a risk to neurologic function if the encephalocele is adjacent to eloquent brain.
