Metoprolol: Most drugs in the class of beta blocker can alleviate few symptoms of anxiety or social phobia. But proponolol (inderal) is the drug of choice among beta blockers, to treat such conditions.

Not exactly: Metoprolol is a beta-blocker that can inhibit the peripheral symptoms of anxiety & panic, but you might still feel the central emotion of anxiety. For some people, the peripheral symptoms (rapid heart rate, sweating, hands shaking, dry mouth, etc) are the most bothersome part of anxiety, even more than the feeling of it. So you might have anxiety but not feel your body's entire response to it.
