A member asked:

Are there good alternative therapies for major depression?

Light, exercise: Exercise and light therapy could be considered helpful alternative remedies for depression. The data are not very compelling regarding the efficacy of st. John's wort or sam-e, the safety of which has not been thoroughly studied alone or in conjunction with other meds. Antidepressants remain the mainstay of treatment for moderately severe depression, and psychotherapy for milder depressions.

Many options: Fortunately we live in an era where there are multiple therapies to treat major depressive disorder (mdd) including: psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, electro convulsive treatment (ect), & repetitive transcranial stimulation (rtms). The choice of treatment(s) will depend upon the nature and severity of your mdd. You and your psychiatrist will decide what treatment options are best for you.
