A 18-year-old male asked:

is playing the play station a good way to relive anxiety?

It depends: In moderation, if playing the play station reduces your anxiety by distracting you, that is ok. However, it could become addictive or a way to avoid interacting with others. If so you may become more anxious when you need to be in social situations. If you have anxiety, i'd suggest that you speak with a psychologist and get to the core of what is bothering you. You may want to consider medication.

Manage anxiety: By learning relaxation skills & learning to modify the thoughts, perceptions & beliefs that trigger your anxiety. Learning to calm your body & your mind is the key. You can learn these skills on your own, but having a mental health professional "coach" you is quicker & more effective. Biofeedback helps learn relaxation skills (www.Bcia.Org & www.Aapb.Org). Entrenched anxiety may require meds.

Work Your Way Up: Imagine different types of audiences to present to - audiences you think likely to judge your performance (a) very critically; (b) somewhat critically; (c) neutrally; (d) somewhat uncritically; and (e) very uncritically. Give presentations to each type of audience, working your way up from the least to the most critical. Once you feel comfortable with one type, graduate to the next type.

Meds/therapy: Anxiety can come from chemical imbalances, a side effect of medications, external stressors, too much change in too short a period of time, and other areas. I would say go to a reputable psychotherapist immediately and talk about what anxiety means to YOU. Also consider a psychiatric evaluation and discuss medication options, depending on symptoms severity.

Feeling Good: Anxiety and depression can be an exspression of your self-talk--how you think/talk to yourself. A mental health professional is a good person to see. Also, "Feeling Good" by David Burns is an excellent self-help book based on science. Don't let the thickness of it intimidate you. Take it bit by bit. The very best to you.
