Black Hairy Tongue: Black staining on the back top of the tongue can be from many causes, the most likely being smoking, poor oral hygiene, bacterial overgrowth and certain medications. Use a tongue blade every day to keep your tongue hygienically clean. See your dentist for an exam and advice. Brush your tongue: As hard as it is going to be, you should brush your tongue as far back as you can to clean plaque and bacteria off the surface of the tongue. Do you smoke cigarettes? That can also cause the tongue to discolor. See your dentist for complete diagnosis.
