If a baby presents with unilateral hip dysplasia, is a brace used or no treatment?

Varies: Hip dysplasia varies from absence of a recognizable hip socket to various levels of formation or just loose ligaments. It can be recognized at birth or not slip out until several months of age and not be recognized until the kid walks. Treatment varies from a hip harness, to a fixed cast brace to surgical release of ligaments and surgical creation of a socket with fixed casting until healed.

Brace: If clinically significant hip dysplasia is present, (abnormal exam past two weeks of age, abnormal hip ultrasound) the bracing is highly likely. However, it depends on the age of the child, the degree of dysplasia, and the presence of risk factors such as breech position to determine when to start. This is a decision that should be made by an orthopedic surgeon.

Depends : Unilateral hip dysplasia can present in many different ways, and treatment indication depends on severity of hip dysplasia and age of patient. Sometimes a brace is indicated, other times observation. If treatment is indicated, babies usually respond faster the earlier the treatment is initiated. The international hip dysplasia Institute has some great videos on how baby hip positioning affects
