Yes elastic stocking: First you have to find out , what is causing acute edema , if it is due to deep vein thrombosis , or vascular problems needs more than the stockings, if related simple residual superficial skin infection use them, and see your doctor.

Needs evaluation.: Recent onset of leg swelling necessitates a full evaluation since there are many potential causes. You should be evaluated by a vein specialist. Swelling could be due to infection, vein clots, medications or even a tumor compressing structures. You will need at least a venous ultrasound and possibly even a ct scan. Following evaluation, then recommendations can be given for treatment.

Options for treatmen: First and foremost, make sure it is lymphedema. If you do not have sharp cutoffs and lobulations but simple pitting swelling that affects the entire foot and leg, it is not lymphedema. The wrong treatment will hurt. Get to a wound care specialist that knows the disease. Treatments can include different types of wraps, pumps, lymphatic massage, etc. No diuretics or antibiotics.

Massage.: A special massage called manual lymphatic drainage used in conjunction with wraps and periodic elevation of leg is the best approach to reduce the edema, then an appropriate stocking can be worn daily to maintain. This is very important because if acute lymphedema is not managed expertly, you may develop chronic lymphedema which could plague you for life.

Leg Edema: Is it at lower leg or whole leg edema or swelling? Did you have u/s to see any veins blocked or lymph node enlargement. If no dvt, massage is ok but due to dvt, you will need different medical tratment as blood thinner. In certain patient can have pelvic mass causing causing whole leg swelling which should be in mind too. Elevation of leg above hip is always recommended & compression stocking too.
