Anxiety: Propranolol is not designed to treat after an anxiety attack. It is taken before and to prevent an anxiety attack!

Anxiety: It sounds like the er doctors were trying to help you with your chief complaint: the anxiety attack you were experiencing. Ativan (lorazepam) can help this, with sufficient dose. You must have been quite anxious, and they wanted the medicine to be effective. A beta blocker would have had no effect on your existing anxiety, but can prevent peripheral anxiety symptoms. Your doctors clearly knew this.
