Very common: It is common for patients to have some light bleeding following cervical examinations (with pap smears, or during cervical exams in pregnancy). If it is heavy or persistent, then call your provider for further evaluation.

Possible : Minimal bleeding may occur with normal. Cervix exam but profuse. Or siginificant bleeding should be considered abnormal.

More common post pap: A pelvic exam itself—is unlikely to cause bleeding. However a pap smear, done during the exam, can cause spotting. A pap smear is done w/ a cervical brush and sent to the lab to check for abnormalities. The brush has bristles that often cause mild irritation. Light brief bleeding is normal-any heavy bleeding, call your doctor.
