CAN BE BY ITSELF: Costochondritis can simply be mild inflammation of the tissue between ribs and may be not be associated with ant other disease and this would be the most common cause. Trauma can cause the inflammation by simply lifting something heavy. Rarely, it could be associated with other illnesses such as rheumatoid or lupus. However costochondritis is not typically the 1st problem of those illnesses.
