Can a pap smear detected any std infections ?

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Pap smear vs STDs: Pap smears are performed to look for pre-cancerous changes in cervix. Often these pre-cancerous changes are caused by human papilooma virus (hpv) which is sexually transmitted (and can now be prevented along w/genital warts in young women & men via vaccination). Abnormal pap smear results can be sent for reflexive testing for hpv.
