Internal light cycle: Melatonin release is suppressed by blue light wavelengths. In the evening, as ambient light color shifts towards the red end of the spectrum, melatonin is released from the pineal gland, promoting sleep. Melatonin levels are high overnight, and drop in the morning as the sun rises. Artificial light (e.g. From computer screens and the like) disrupts this natural rhythm and can worsen insomnia.
