'pink eye': Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the outer lining mucous membranes of the eye. It can be caused by irritants, allergies, environmental factors, viruses, bacteria and even fungi, so it is important to seek medical attention if it does not clear up after a few days with supportive therapy. Artificial tears and cold compresses help if it is viral, irritant or allergic.
