Pain, xray findings: Patients with broken bones have localized tenderness at the site of injury. Sometimes there is sweilling, bruising and deformity. Frequently there is pain with attempted use or limited use. An x-ray will show a broken bone in the hand.

X-ray: The best test is a good physical exam and x-rays. Sometimes both hands may have to be x-rayed in a child because of growth centers. On rare occasions an MRI may be needed.
