Outer vs middle ear: Middle ear infections are relatively common in younger children while outer ear infections are more common as we age, especially in those who spend a lot of time in the water. Middle ear infections hurt but the pain is deeper inside while outer ear infections hurt when you touch your ear or pull on it. Go see your family doc for an evaluation but in meantime, Auralgan (benzocaine and antipyrine) otc may offer pain relief.
