Leg clots: Most originate from clots in the large veins in the legs - sometimes from pelvic veins, especially women. Risk for clotting includes: smoking, hormones (estrogens - birth control pills), cancer, family history, obesity, prolonged immobilization, and recent surgery, advancing age.

More reasons...: I agree with dr. Orr's explanation...And some more reasons for clot to form: cancers, infections, chemotherapy, trauma, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and clotting factors deficiency can increase your risk of forming clots in the legs/armsheart/vena cava etc....
