Depends: If you are talking about a localized cartilage problem such as in a knee or shoulder...Or a inherited condition or developmental condition which affects cartolilage throughout our body. Xrays can give you a good sense of the overall condition of the joint surfaces. However, a focal cartilage injury is best picked up with a mri.
