See below: Cartilage is a soft tissue that surrounds the ends of some bones and forms both sides of a joint. When it is healthy, cartilage surfaces glide smoothly over each other. When it is not, a scrubbing sometimes painful motion can occur. Cartilage disorders can be arthritic, posttraumatic, or inflammatory among other causes.
