Needle? Syringe?: Depends which part you are referring to. A hypodermic needle goes under (hypo-) the skin (dermis). It can be referred to as a 'butterfly' if it has a short connecting tube and 'wings' for the phlebotomist / nurse to hold while inserting the needle. If needle goes straight to a guide/shield for blood collection in tubes, those are usually all called vacutainer tubes (because have vacuum inside).
