Ankle sprain: Ankle sprains are common. Almost everyone gets one once in a while. It is caused usually by inverting your ankle (it rolls over sideways) when you trip or fall or step on an object. It is most important for athletes, who need a full rehab program to go back to their sport. For older people, physical therapy is helpful, but actually the most important issue is identifying what caused her to fall.

1: She should have it evaluated and an xray taken. An xray should be taken to rule out a fracture. Even though you can walk on the ankle a fracture may still be present to the ankle and/or the foot. Often a 5th metatarsal fracture is missed because a foot xray is not taken with the ankle xrays.

Ankle sprains: Ankle sprains are caused by an unnatural twisting or force on the ankle bones of the foot, which may result in excessive stretching or tearing of one or more ligaments on the outside of the ankle. The severity of the sprain can impact the degree of damage as well as the type and duration of treatment. If not properly treated, ankle sprains may develop into long-term problems.
