Yes, and No: I do not know of any medical or physiological reason that would cause you to want to chew your tongue when smelling carpet. However if it is only when you smell new carpet, there may have been a learned behavior from your childhood. New carpet in the 1970's had fairly high levels of formaldehyde present and degassing. If you had been exposed to a high enough level as a child it could caused this.
