Viral illness: Chickenpox is a rash and fever caused by the varicella virus, usually in children - although it is far less common now that most kids are vaccinated against it. The same identical virus causes shingles in adults.

There is a vaccine that can be given to prevent varicella infection. If you haven't had chicken pox you should ask your doctor if this vaccine would be appropriate for you.
