Depends: If taken early acyclovir can reduce the intensity/spread of sores. It is a reasonable use in adults who are more at risk for severe pneumonia/complications but rarely used in kids. Once it has reached well into the rash stage it has been ongoing in the body for some time & will generally produce sores in waves for 5-7 days.
