Hope this answers it: The physiology of bowel control is complex, involving coordination of reflexive & voluntary muscle response, nerves of local & central origin including those that control sensory & motor function of colon, rectum, & anal canal. Loss of bowel control requires complex evaluation. Patient's age, medications, co-medical & neurologic problems, mental competency, exposures & risks, & diet all factor in.
