Knee pain: Rice protocol right after the injury should help - rest, ice, compression, elevation. This more natural than anything. Using a knee support such as a knee sleeve may keep the swelling at bay and give your knee extra rest. Less weight bearing by using crutches may help as well. If not improving in the next few days - 1 week, see doc.

Knee pain: Your pain location is related to your mechanism of injury, whether high or low energy, jumping, twisting. Need a good history. Check with orthopedic surgeon. Sounds like you may have jumpers knee or patellar tendonitis.
