Not if truly vertica: If the skin excess is truly vertically, then a vertical or fleur-de-lis (inverted t) incision may be the best. However in most instances this can be managed with a circumferential scar. In rare instances the vertical excess can be removed with two vertical scars along each side but this is less preferable than a single midline scar.

Yes: The standard abdominoplasty scar is a lower transverse one on the abdomen. There are rarely indications for a vertical component also, but as with any surgery you should discuss this in detail with your surgeon.

Usually not vertical: A younger patient should have better skin quality so if you just have excess fat then try weightloss first, followed by liposuction. If you still have excess tissues in the abdominal areas then consider a tummy tuck which usually leaves a patient with a low transverse scar. See a plastic surgeon in your area for the best treatment option.

Physical Examination: Most of the abdominoplasty operations are done through a transverse lower abdominal wall incision. Sometimes, if patients have a significant amount of excess skin vertically, a vertical excision of skin may be helpful as well. Physical examination and a full communication of your goals as well as potential risks/complications associated with each option will be important.

Usually Horizontal: A tummy tuck scar is typically horizontal and below the panty line. Be sure to consult with board certified plastic surgeons and discuss scar option specifics for your particular case.
