Variable: Depends on the individual problem. Some barium swallows are performed for eating problems to determine safety of feeding and prevention of aspiration. Various textures or thickness of barium are administered to determine safe swallowing. These are usually performed between speech therapy sessions. In general these should not be performed more frequently than every 3 months until problem corrected.
