My father has atrial septal defect. what can i learn about this?

Common,easy fix: Asd=communicatio between upper heart chambers.Incidence 1/1500 live births, m/f ratio =1/2 , 7-10% of heart malformations.Half close spontaneously by 2yo, those that persist >2-4 can be closed by open surgery or sometimes by an umbrella like patch placed thru a catheter in the groin.Untreated adults are at risk of thrombotic stroke, rhythm disturbance or pulmonary probs.No direct inheritance risk.

ECHO/CATH.: Need to dtermine the type, (secundum, primum, sinus venosus, unroofed coronary sinus, patent foramen ovale) the shunt fraction, is there pulmonary hypertension, is it reversible, are there other congenital cardiac or anomalous pulmonary venous return. Depending on the age, are the coronaries normal or with associated coronary artery disease. Tx is closure. Talk to cardiologist.
