Most cases no: The chances of being born with a heart defect are approximately 8 per every thousand deliveries (a little under 1%). Most babies born with a heart defect (asd, vsd or any of a multitude of others) have no family members with heart disease. Now, when there is a first line family member with a heart defect the chances increase to about 2-3%, so there may be some genetic component.

Polygenic influence: The congenital heart defects are influenced by multiple genes on various separate chromosomes. Except for a few known to come up in specific autosomal dominant/recessive syndromes, most have minimal transmission risk.Inheritance of any chd from an affected parent is quoted at 4% for any chd (not necessarily the same one).If a parent with a chd has a child with a chd risk increases for the next pg.
