Ritalin (methylphenidate) and valium: I am not sure what your son is being treated for. I assume adhd or add if Ritalin (methylphenidate) was prescribed. Valium carries no benefit in the treatment of the above and can make things worse by making him addicted. I would strongly suggest you talk to your son's doc if you have concerns but look into other treatment modalities such as psychotherapy/counseling rather than getting him on more meds.

ADD vs anxiety: Those medications are totally different, and valium would never be indicated for treatment of add. Some kids with add/adhd do have anxiety disorders in combination with their add. However, valium is not a good choice for treatment of anxiety disorders in kids. There are much better treatments, both medication and therapy, that are used for anxiety in children. It is essential to work with his doc!
