Uncertainty: Uncertain results from a breast needle biopsy usually results in another needle biopsy under x-ray or ultrasound guidance, or an open incisional breast biopsy. Generally a partial mastectomy is reserved for a cancer operation.

What prompted that?: If you have had an abnormal mammogram, a biopsy of some form is likely the next step. If you had a biopsy, the details of the pathology should be discussed with a general surgeon to determine your options for what, if anything, still needs to be done. Mastectomy of any nature (partial modified etc.) is usually for cancer.
