Depends on the nail: The swelling is caused by the nail plate "biting" into the nail fold. If you don't address this, it will continue to stay swollen. Soaking in a vinegar-water (1:4 ratio) solution can help soothe the swelling and discomfort, but have your ingrown nail examined properly. It will need to be trimmed or may need to be avulsed (cut) down the side to avoid continued irritation.
