A member asked:

How long before you can get a blood clot from birth control if you smoke?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Blood clots & cigs: It depends on the form of birth control you are using, but if you have taken 'the pill' for more than a year without a problem you have made it through the most dangerous time. Given that you are close to 40 though, smoking and birth control pills are a bad combination. Please consider stopping smoking (you'll look younger longer if you do and won't have any of a huge list of medical problems).
