Probable infection: Most likely the ear canal skin was injured and became infected or the moisture promoted bacterial or fungal growth either one leading to a canal infection (swimmer's ear). These can be very painful and involve lymph nodes in the neck or the skin adjacent to the canal. Responds best to topical antibiotic drops alone. Add oral antibiotics if there is cellulitis or significant node involvement.
