It's complex: It's great that your husband is taking such good care of himself. His HDL is determined not just by his diet and exercise, but also by his parents. It's quite possible that despite everything he is doing right, his low HDL is due to a genetic trait. He should continue to do what he is doing, and also discuss the levels with his doctor to see if it's something that should be addressed with meds.

Could be genetic.: The best way to raise cardioprotective HDL is cardiovascular exercise. Shoot for forty or forty-five minutes daily. Supplementation with no-flush Niacin may help as well, 2000 to 3000mg daily in divided doses. Fish oil supplements may help this as well, as healthy fats can raise the HDL. Stubbornness in the HDL level could be hard wired, i.e. genetic.
