Akathisia: You may be describing akathisia or the desire to move about caused by some medications eg antipsychotics, which are often given to patients w/dementia, although they carry a black box warning about increase mortality. Any way, best thing to do is take your father-in-law to see his doctor to review medications (stop offending ones). Rather than restrain him, try to support his moving around safely.

Agitation?: Many patients with dementias have behavioural reactions, and commonly is agitation. He may possess normal pressure hydrocephalus, but may more likely have alzheimer's disease. Exelon (rivastigmine) patch and Namenda may control the symptoms, but Depakote is another approach to consider. Dr lin was concerned about medication reaction, and definitely track this down.
