A member asked:

What are the normal reference ranges for neu, lym, mon, eos, baso %;s for a 6 yr old, and are those no's more vital than the overall wbc ct?

Basically as adults: I wish labs would stop reporting percentages as they are meaningless apart from the absolute counts. Absolute neutrophil and lymphocyte counts fluctuate wildly and unpredictably and unless way outside given reference ranges, it means nothing. Eos and basos are of interest only if very high (eos more than 500, basos only in context). Labs mean nothing except in the context of a human being.

CBC Normals Change : Adult normal values do not apply to children and vary with age. For a 6 yr old the WBC reference range is 5.5-15.5 with neut-32-54%; lymphs-28-48%; eos-0-3%; baso-0-1% and monos-3-6%. Of the neutrophils there are segmented and band types. There should be no nucleated red blood cells. If total WBC is too high or too low it can be a problem or if there are abnormal white cells.
