Ultrasound: Exam usually involves application of gel to get full contact of the probe against the abdominal wall skin, then placement of hand held probe on top of it to get scan images which appear on the machine monitor. No pain, unless the underlying gallbladder is tender. You do need to be npo for a gallbladder study. Ask your doctor or radiologist for details.

Little: A gallbladder ultrasound is not very different from an ultrasound done during pregnancy. The gel that they use can be cold, but the test per se is not uncomfortable. When done for patients with acute inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), pressing the ultrasound probe on the gb will be tender.
