Avoiding the trigger: If your asthma is allergic in nature, avoiding the offending allergens would be prudent. For those with persistent asthma and inhaled cortisone and/or leukotriene modifier (singulair) are often helpful. Other approaches include adding a long-acting bronchodilator or getting xolair (a bio-engineered product to bind the blood's allergy antibodies). Allergy shots are another option.

Action plans: Since asthma intensity and triggers vary from case to case, the best results come from individual action plans. If you learn about your illness & meet with your doc, you can devise such a plan. This lets you decide when to reduce or increase med use and what meds to use.It lets you know how to recognize a deteriorating pattern so you can go in for urgent care.
