Metformin: Metformin should not be prescribed for type 1 diabetes prevention as it's never been approved or shown to be helpful for that purpose. It can be used for Insulin resistance and has been shown to delay the occurrence of type 2 diabetes, though. It can only help if you also employ healthy lifestyle such as diet and exercise routine.

Lowers Insulin Resis: Metformin lowers your insulin resistance and in Pre Diabetics it may along with lifestyle changes delay the onset of full blown Diabetes

Pre-diabetes: My colleagues think I am crazy but after many decades in Endocrinology I still don't understand the diagnosis of "pre-diabetes". I can never get a meaningful answer. Either one has diabetes or does not. That said, Metformin is available at many stores at no cost so taking 500 twice a day will do no harm and little good. You may later develop diabetes - who knows?
