Yes*: Although it is possible to get pregnant with an iud (intrauterine device) in place, the risk is very low. The manufacturer of the Mirena (levonorgestrel) only obtained fda approval for 5 years because that is the average amount of time it takes to deplete the Levonorgestrel (synthetic progesterone) in the device. However, there have been iuds before that were made of similar materials yet had no hormones at all.
