Diffetent: A hernia is an actuall hole in the abdominal wall. This allows abdominal contents to pass through. Amuscle tear is a rip in the muscles without a defect in the abdominal wall.

See below: Muscle tear is just what it sounds like - a tear in a muscle. A hernia, by definition, is a defect in fascia (a layer of connective tissue above and below the muscles) through which internal organs can prolapse and get incarcerated. A muscle tear needs rest, pain medications and cold/hot packs. Hernia needs a surgical repair to avoid incarceration and strangulation of internal organs.

Hole in the wall: A hernia is when there is an actual hole in the abdominal wall through which abdominal contents such as fat and intestines can pass through. A simple "tear" may be where a muscle is damaged, but only partially, thus not creating an actual hole. However, a muscle tear could be bad enough to cause a hole in some cases. Hope this helps.
