Could be a number : Of things. To determine etiology, best to send a specimen to a lab. A podiatrist or dermatologist could do this to help rule out fungus, bacteria, keratinized tissue etc. Sometimes trauma, vitamin deficiencies, or chemicals like prior nail polish wearing could cause this effect.

Depends if white pat: It depends if white patch on top of nail or under the nail. If on top it could a fungus. If is white appearance it could be a leukonycia of air under the nail plate. This should grow out.
