If methotrexate works be decreasing folic acid which inhibits cell growth, isn't adding high doses of folic acid defeating the purpose?

Not really : There are many mechanisms by which Methotrexate modifies the function of the immune system. Inhibition of Folic Acid metabolism is probably only one of the many ways it works. I only prescribe Folic Acid to patients only if they are having side effects. Many patients don't need it and any mild side effects resolve over several months. In europe, most rheumatologists don't even use folic acid.

No: Reduction of folate (folic acid) levels is a side effect of methotrexate, but the medication actually alters subsequent folate (folic acid) metabolism.
